Capitalism, Socialism, Communism and Deaf Sovereignty
I realized something today.
Socialism WILL NOT work if we are considered "sub-citizens" by the hearing supermajority. They will never look at deaf people as equals. We as proletariats will eternally be needing handouts from our politburo. We will never have the capacity to take care of ourselves. Or in other words, the fate of the Deaf will be out of our hands and in the hands of the hearing. SCREW THAT.
Please keep listening. I will get to the point where I will justify socialism.
We need to take the capitalist path right now. It is clear that the status quo has not done the Deaf any good. We are still dependent on SSI and our deaf schools. Gallaudet eternally churns out teachers for deaf children (we still NEED more deaf teachers, mind you) and teach them how to live on SSI, and the lucky ones smart enough will go to Gallaudet to learn how to teach, and the cycle continues on and on. The ideal "hearing version" of socialism will have that the deaf doesn't have to worry about getting by, that all of our needs are provided for. We will not have the opportunity to really rise up and prove that the Deaf are a distinct group of people, capable of doing anything without being forced to have their cochleae implanted or have their children genetically engineered to be hearing.
Successful capitalistic ventures by the Deaf will enable us to really rise up above the level of the typical hearing and to really show that we are just like any other normal person in that anyone, given the right opportunities, can become a movie director, author, scientist, Nobel prize winner, Pulitzer prize winner, that kind of stuff. If there are enough Deaf people at that kind of level, I guarantee you, the hearing will take notice and start to respect us more.
And once the capitalistic path is successful, we will have plenty of $$ (capital) AND the resources necessary to make the transition to a socialist society. ALL of us will be well-off enough to pay enough taxes to a government that is well equipped with enough resources and intellectual capabilities to provide for all of our needs.
If the United States of Canada actually secedes from Jesusland, that would create the best opportunity to create some kind of sovereignty for, by, and of the Deaf, sort like an Indian reservation, so we will be able to be exempt from some taxes, such as education, health service, etc. With that money, we could be able to tax ourselves and with the tax revenues, provide for our own education, health care by Deaf doctors, etc..
I realized when I was telling this to my roommate, Matt Fisher, that this is exactly what Karl Marx envisioned what the ideal path to communism would be.
Some of you are self-professed advocates of socialism, so is there anything wrong with my theory? :)
What's up with the deaf in Iraq?
We have been relentlessly bombarded with propaganda from left and right about Iraq, its current conditions, security, well-being of the people, education, public works and utilities, and so on. One minute it is all bloody, bombings all over with the population angry at the americans and the next minute, on a different channel, it is all rosy over there, with thousands of schools and hospitals being repaired/rebuilt, and with plenty of Iraqis tremendously grateful for what the Americans did.
A while ago, it came to mind that I never heard anything about the state of the deaf in Iraq. How are they doing? How did they fare under Saddam? Are they any better off or worse off? Do they use sign language or oralism? Do they have interpreters? Do they need any international assistance? Do they have any deaf schools? Are these schools equipped enough? Are the teachers competent enough in sign language to teach? Do the Iraqi universities have any deaf students? Do they get any services? Are they aware of any rights they should/are entitled to? Is Ayad Allawi aware about the needs of the deaf? There are so many questions that have popped up in my mind that I couldn't take it any more, so here I am writing about this. Are there even any truly Deaf teachers in Iraq?
LET'S GO TO IRAQ THIS SUMMER!
I am serious here. Who's with me? All we need is, I believe, 10-20 interested people, and we can start lobbying for serious support. There is no question Gallaudet and NAD should be supportive of this. No one out of their minds wouldn't support this effort to improve the lives if deaf Iraqis. Bring the Deaf Way to them! I guarantee you, several of my international friends would jump at this! Rico, Andreas? Anybody?
$$$ matters. The U.S. is staking at least $200 billion on Iraq. It should be relatively simple to coax a mil or 2 bucks from the government in order to bring the best of education and technology to the deaf Iraqis. The World Bank also comes to mind.
I ventured into the Googleosphere to see what I could learn about the state of the deaf in Iraq. Interesting. There's a state-run sewing factory (sweatshop?) for deaf Iraqis where the women are beaten. Excerpt from the article: With their translator ready to go, Lindner and 352nd Lt. Col. Jim Otwell don bulletproof vests and Kevlar helmets and drive out of the compound to visit the state-run sewing factory for deaf Iraqis.
"We want to find out what your working conditions are, anything that we can do to help you," Otwell tells the young women at the factory. He speaks in English slowly, for the benefit of an Arabic translator, who then turns to an Arabic-speaking sign-language translator to sign Otwell's questions to the seamstresses.
The girls' hands start flying as they tell Otwell about their hated boss.
"She would beat us, and pull our hair!" signs Nadia Jabar.
"What about working conditions ... do you have hearing aids? Books you can read?" Otwell asks.
"Nothing!" they sign back.
Otwell and Lindner tour the building, which is cold and dusty. But inside several of the rooms are old products they can sell - hundreds of Iraqi flags they've sewn, dresses and pillowcases. Already the team has arranged for the factory to produce all the uniforms for Iraq's civil defense forces, and piles of cut brown pant legs line the floor.
Now the workers are getting $60 a month, part of which is spent on housing them at the factory. Otwell and Lindner promise to come back soon, and ask the workers to make a list of things that they really need, so maybe next year the factory can get some upgrades. On the way out, the workers jump and clap, as Lindner and Otwell escort the old boss - who had come back to the factory despite a previous arrest by Iraqi police for beating the workers - away from the building.
Indeed, there are schools for the deaf in Iraq, 22 of them. ReliefWeb reported that schools for the deaf opened for exams last June. It is sad, they, as expected, have many problems. CARE, an international aid organization, is giving assistance to the 22 deaf schools, but it is not enough. The teachers desperately need training in sign language, and especially in modern instruction techniques. It is appalling! They sent 170 teachers and principals to Jordan for training! I am afraid that the Jordanian method of deaf instruction is very un-Deaf-friendly. I recall in my undergraduate years at Gallaudet, there was a Jordanian girl in my class, and she did not give off the impression that the state of the education of the deaf there was very well-off. Please correct me if I am wrong. Another article here. This article says that the American Friends Service Committee, a Quaker organization, provided a $10,000 grant to CARE's Deaf Education program.
It's gonna be so cool if we were able to travel to the ancient lands of Babylon. That, to me, is true world travelling. It's even better when you travel not for the sake of travelling, but to make a difference.
We just gotta do something! It is time to show that the Deaf are very capable of showing the way! We cannot let hearing people handle the fate of the deaf Iraqis in their hands without appropriate Deaf input and involvement. If we don't do something, who will?
I am X'ing my summer for Iraq. A month or 2. Anybody with me?
Advice to a College Student Circa 1530
From the writings of Heinrich Bullinger from the 16th century, as quoted in The Early Reformation on the Continent by Owen Chadwick (Oxford University Press, 2001): (source)
1. Fear God. Be humble before God. Have a firm faith. Pray that your faith may be active in charity. Pray for your country-parents-friends. Always end prayers with the Lord's Prayer. Use the Te Deum as an act of praise. Read three chapters from the Bible every day. 2. Be reticent-more willing to listen than to speak. 3. Try to learn Hebrew and Greek as well as Latin; and some history, and some philosophy, and some science. 4. Keep the body clean and the clothes tidy but do not wear clothes that will cause comment. 5. Don't eat too much. Don't drink too much. 6. Keep your conversation cheerful, and moderate, and free from malice.
The French failed the Global Test
The French are hypocrites! They raise all kinds of hell when the U.S. went into Iraq "unilaterally" with a coalition of 35 nations, without UN approval. Now, they are doing the exact same thing to Ivory Coast, a tiny African country, only with a coalition of one, themselves. The French air force bombed Yamoussoukro, the capital of Ivory Coast. "We are being attacked by the French," said an Ivorian soldier, according to this article: Explosions, Gunfire in Ivory Coast Capital.
THE FRENCH NEVER RECEIVED UN APPROVAL!
Hmm, interesting, it just occurred to me that the Ivory Coast government is Christian, and the rebels are Muslim. So, the French are on the side of the Muslim rebels, bombing the sovereign Ivory Coast? A pattern seemingly is emerging from the behavior of the French.
Bill Clinton: Why We Lost
Check out this article by the New York Post, Bill: Why Bush Won, about former President Clinton's views on why John Kerry lost the election. Some excerpts:
Clinton also said that Democrat John Kerry was hurt by the polarizing issue of gay marriage, which was legalized by Massachusetts' top court and put on the ballot in 11 states, and the surfacing of a tape from Osama bin Laden in the final days of the race.
Reminded of terrorism by the bin Laden tape, voters decided they didn't want to "change horses" during a time of heightened concern over national security, Clinton said. ... Clinton attributed Kerry's loss to the Democrats' failure to combat how they were portrayed by Republicans to small-town America.
"If we let people believe that our party doesn't believe in faith and family, doesn't believe in work and freedom, that's our fault," he said. ... Clinton said the country was more divided than it was in 1968 and called for an end to the "culture war."
In his hourlong speech Clinton, who had open-heart surgery in September, gave Bush and the Republicans full credit for the election victory.
"The Republicans had a clear message, a good messenger, great organization and great strategy," he said.
Clinton said Bush should use his second term to move toward less dependence on foreign oil.
"This election presents a great opportunity for President Bush and a great opportunity for Democrats, and the two are not necessarily in conflict," he said.
That's why I loved and still love President Clinton, despite his blowjob in the Oval Office. I just hope that my Democrat friends will heed his words.
What next? Secession?
For quite a long while, I have had this thread of rumination that has persistently manifested itself in my mind- imagining the actual breakup of the United States of America. I have seen people saying that it is inevitable, that it is bound to happen, just like Rome and all the great civilizations. But, I never imagined that it just might happen NOW, in THIS generation.
I have read several articles that pointed to this very possibility. After reading this article,One Nation, Handcuffed Together, I just couldn't take it any more. I have to holler out, make this known to all regular Americans, in order to protect the unity of the 50 states. Consider this, what the author said in that blog:
That's when it struck me: What if Lincoln had just let the South go? What if we now had a country on our southern border made up of the states that formed the Confederacy?
Hundreds of thousands of people wouldn't have died.
OK, the slaves wouldn't have been freed as soon. The Confederacy probably would have been the last holdout country with slaves, but at some point, it would have had to bow to world pressure and give up slavery. In the meantime, perhaps creative Abolitionists in the North would have found ways to make daring raids into the Confederacy, and the underground railroad would have still operated, and ... Well, who knows what other methods for freeing the slaves might have arisen?
But think about it. If the South were its own country, then all those people who so desire it could have a Christian theocracy. They could have a country where the Bible is read in schools; where Creationism is taught in science class and evolution is not; where homosexuality would be against the law; where the Internet and Hollywood movies and rap music could be banned by law.
There would be trade relations between the Union of the United States and the Confederacy, and travel arrangements.
Also, evangelical Christians from the U. Of the U.S. who desired to live in a Christian theocracy could emigrate to the Confederacy. Likewise, progressive-minded citizens from the South, as well as gays and others who would be persecuted, could immigrate here. ... Yup, maybe Lincoln should have let the South go. As I understand it, many Southerners consider Yankees foreigners anyway.
Now, you could always take what one American citizen said with a grain of salt, but if you have a heaping spoonful of salt and try to swallow it, what would happen?
Take another blog that I happened to read shortly after the re-election of President Bush, the day after, actually:
It's Wednesday morning and liberals around the nation are contemplating the awful implications of another four years in Bush country. Some New Yorkers have already applied for Canadian immigration papers in fear of a Bush win.
The electoral map, however, offers another option one that may be more sensible and more durable than leaving the country. How about a new Confederacy that combines the West Coast North Eastern states and Canada, all joined together in a new Union of Provinces and States based on rational and democratic principles? This would leave the cowboy heartland and the South to the creationist fate they deserve not to mention the series of hurricanes that either the global warming they dont believe in or the God they do is sending as a message to them. ... At present, so many blue collar workers whose wages are frozen, who face export of their jobs abroad, and whose unemployment benefits are about to disappear, continue to abhor the Democrats as the party of abortion and gay marriage. If the Democrats cannot frame a platform that appeals to those voters, then there is little hope for the Democratic Party or for the United States for that matter.
As for the rest of the world, they'll just have to work out a way to carry on together without the constructive input of the worlds strongest military power.
Scary, eh? Especially when you read and feel that pulse of a sentiment running very prevalently throughout this country (or, actually, these blue blotches on the Red America map) Oops, RED America.....

Kerry and the terrorists
It is of utomost importance that we prevent a traitor from becoming President. Harsh, yes, but there is only one day left. Being "AWOL" from a Texas Air National Guard base pales to this kind of accusation Kerry faces. How many accusations have been levied against Bush that directly threatens our national security? his AWOL-ness, proved to be a hoax by CBS? His cocaine use in college days? Laura Bush selling pot? His twins drinking underage with a fake ID? (In Texas, I got my fake ID at 18!) His Christianity?
Now, with Kerry, the accusations are VERY serious, whether true or not. They question his loyalty to this country, simple as that. Now, when you investigate these charges, the evidence you find is complelling and overwhelming. Nothing like that one-page, forged document falsified by CBS NEWS immediately debunked by us bloggers within an hour. AS to this day, the Swift Vets' charges still stand.
WAKE UP, America. Do you really want someone like this as President? This is from Joseph Farah's editorial.
John Kerry says he will hunt down terrorists with the same energy he used to pursue the Viet Cong.
"With the same energy ... I put into going after the Viet Cong and trying to win for our country, I pledge to you I will hunt down and capture or kill the terrorists before they harm us," Kerry said. "And we will wage a war on terror that makes America proud and brings the world to our side."
That would be a pretty funny line if it weren't distinctly possible that Kerry could actually win tomorrow's presidential election.
Why is it funny?
If they know anything about the way John Kerry conducted himself in Vietnam and afterward, Osama bin Laden and Islamic terrorists are praying to Allah to bring him victory.
Kerry's claim to combat fame in Vietnam is shooting in the back an unarmed, wounded member of the Viet Cong – some eyewitnesses say he was a young teenager.
He won medals for this heroic deed – because he, John Kerry, wrote up the after-action reports.
But while the war was still being waged and brave Americans were risking their lives in ways Kerry never imagined, he came home and championed the Viet Cong cause. He became the Vietnamese Communists' secret weapon. He became their fifth column right here in the United States. He became their tool.
That's the shocking story discovered buried in military archives in Lubbock, Texas, last week by members of the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, who have tried to share this vital information with the American people and received little help from a Kerry-supporting media elite.
Kerry not only met twice with the leaders of the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese delegations in Paris in 1971, he actively took their directions for fomenting protests in the United States.
In other words, he turned.
He flipped.
He went over the hill.
He joined the enemy.
It wasn't that Kerry just did things that pleased the enemy. He took their cues. He did their bidding. He earned that place of prominence on the wall of the "War Crimes Museum" in Hanoi.
John Kerry was a war hero all right – for the Viet Cong.
And now, incredibly, Kerry is citing once again his Vietnam "heroics" as the basis for his resume to lead the war against Islamic terrorists.
I haven't been this shocked by something Kerry said since his "reporting for duty" convention speech.
Of all the things John Kerry could say, why does he keep bringing up Vietnam?
He can't help himself – because Kerry hasn't changed since 1971.
He's the same guy today that he was then – a little richer, a little grayer, but just as treacherous, just as conniving, just as ambitious, just as un-American.
And that's why it's not so funny that Kerry has made this little joke. Perhaps he is sending a message around the world to America's enemies once again. Bin Laden knows what Kerry did in 1971. All of America's enemies know his importance in history is not as a warrior chasing down semi-naked youngsters in black pajamas. His real significance is the damage he did to America's morale at a trying time in history. His real significance is the boost he gave America's enemies in 1971. His real significance is getting away with that kind of treason against his country and leveraging the fame it brought him into a viable presidential candidacy 33 years later.
Tomorrow it's time to turn Kerry into a footnote in American history. Tomorrow it's time to let Kerry know you remember. Tomorrow it's time to sentence him to political oblivion for the crime of treason. Tomorrow it's time put the specter of John Kerry behind us once and for all.
